The first step when creating a solution to anything is doing thorough market research. When creating the burnout management methodology, I asked dozens of burned out professionals what it is they struggled with and which skills they felt would reduce their burnout. I also asked individuals with strong work-life balance what skills they attributed their balance to. From this research, patterns quickly emerged. The same topics came up repeatedly and make up the burnout management methodology today.

These skills, when applied in combination, have been able to alleviate the burnout of hundreds of one-on-one clients, group coaching clients, course users, corporate training participants, and now, readers.

The Cure For Burnout

By Emily Ballesteros, MA

Is dread the first thing you feel when you wake up in the morning? Are you working in the evenings and on weekends to "catch up"? Have you already beat burnout once, only to find it creeping back? If you answered yes to any of these, you’re in need of a cure for burnout.

In The Cure for Burnout, burnout management coach Emily Ballesteros combines scientific and cultural research, her expertise in organizational psychology, and the tried-and true strategies she’s successfully implemented with clients around the globe to demystify burnout for our post-pandemic world – and set you on a path toward a life of personal and professional balance. Ballesteros outlines five areas in which you can build healthy habits to combat burnout—mindset, personal care, time management, boundaries, and stress management. She offers clear, easy-to-implement tools to help you find greater balance, energy, and fulfillment, showing you how to:

  • break burnout habits that keep you in a pattern of chronic overwhelm

  • create sustainable work/life balance through predictable personal care

  • get more done in less time while creating forward momentum toward a meaningful life

  • identify and set your personal and professional limits, guilt-free

  • master your stress and detach from your stressors

The Cure for Burnout provides a holistic method for burnout management to address the epidemic of our always-on, chronically overextended culture, empowering us to reclaim control of our own lives once and for all.

BOOK REVIEWS

"A must-read for anyone who knows or suspects they are suffering from burnout." — Stroop W., Netgalley reviewer

"This was the best book on burnout I've read in a LONG time. Actionable, supportive, realistic—it made me feel empowered and in community, not alone. The voice is sharp, clear, and witty, and I took copious notes. I'll be buying everyone I know a copy when it releases!" —Emily M., Netgalley reviewer

"I cannot express how much this book is going to change my life...I’m going to buy it for everyone in my life because everyone I know, even if they don’t suffer from burnout, can use this book to create a healthy lifestyle. Hands down 5 out of 5 stars." — Adrianna H., Netgalley reviewer

"Reading [The Cure for Burnout] already makes you feel better, makes you feel seen, heard, understood and validated. And then there is advice and suggestions – presented in a way that makes it look DOABLE. Actually doable. Loved it." — Ag I, Netgalley reviewer

"Really great practical advice! I have been following Emily on IG for years and this book is the perfect expansion to her burnout graphics and topics she discusses online....I will be sharing this with all my friends and coworkers!" — Katie S., Netgalley reviewer

"I think I've read about every book about burnout, habit tracking, figuring out your goals that have been trending, but something about this one was really quite a joy to get through. The writing was easy, relatable, and dare I say, easily consumable." — Jenae D., Netgalley reviewer

"Working and redefining ourselves is the epitome of being human. I think that sometimes we become so caught up on the hype and trying to please others before we please ourselves and it is so detrimental. This author was able to bring out those lessons that we need to hear and learn in order to become our best selves!" — Betsy H., Netgalley reviewer

"Incredible book - must read. I’ve recommended it before I even finished reading to many people in my life, from coworkers to friends and family. This book taught me the importance of establishing boundaries in every context (personal, professional, etc) - it not only gives you the how, but also stresses the why of the importance of establishing boundaries. I feel a lot more confident and at peace with my schedule now. I feel empowered to stand by the choices that I make for myself. This book holistically changed my perspective on what I’m willing to tolerate and forced me to evaluate how I feel about every interaction/action throughout my day and think about if and how to change what doesn’t suit me. It’s a very well written and easy to understand read. Emily includes great graphics and examples that really helps the messaging sync in. I’m really glad I came across this title, every chapter was a value add to creating balance in my life." — Early reader review

"This book took me a while to read.... but for a very good reason. I would read one chapter, sit, digest it, and find ways to apply what I read in my day-to-day life. I've never highlighted, bookmarked, or taken so many notes from a book in my entire life. I found this book to be so helpful in addressing burn out. I found it at a time when I was having a lot of work stress and was able to utilize these to help me have a more balanced life." — Early reader review

"As someone whose work life balance changed dramatically this year – I was excited to receive this Advance Reader Copy from Random Publishing house. The book is in several sections – 1) to identify the types of burnout (I had no idea there were different types) and 2) offers tips on how to manage burnout. I thought the entire book was not only relatable and helpful for me as someone experiencing the start of burnout but also as a manager to help identify if my employees are in a particular stage of burnout. I recommend this book to everyone and as soon as I finished the book – I immediately followed the author on Instagram and Tik Tok." — Early reader review

"Really excellent material that goes into personal/social and professional burnout from multiple angles -- self-care, boundaries, knowing what you want, taking chances, There's a lot of great advice and exercises for building the life that works better for you. It's a very positive, proactive and constrictive. I really liked it a lot. I also want to come back and write a better review." — Early reader review

"This book is part practical guide, part in depth research, part zippy 1-liners to chant to yourself, and all cheering you on. What a great balance of theory and application. I want Emily to be my friend, colleague, and mentor. This book is applicable to those seeking balance as well as those coming out the other side of burnout recovery to reinforce and supplement your own burnout recovery program. It does not assume work is evil, but offers ways to seek that oh so elusive balance." — Early reader review

"Burnout was a huge corporate buzzword during Covid and remote working. Now that the pandemic is behind and companies have mandated return-to-wrkplace, they act as if burnout has been cured. But that is far from the truth. Burnout lives on in the lives of many workers throughout the US and worldwide. So, this book is a great resource for those in the midst of burnout. It is written for the individual, not the manager, but we can all learn from Ballesteros...Filled with great illustrations, this is what I enjoyed the most. Each chapter contains tools to add to your toolkit, such as minimums, romanticization, gamification, reminders and accountability for personal care. I particuarly liked the tools for stress management, such as fact-feeling-story, tangible vs intangible list, cognitive reframing and burnout jenga. The chapters are long but worth reading carefully while taking notes. I loved this book and have a new set of tools I plan to use when I sense burnout rearing its ugly heads." — Early reader review

"Very helpful, approachable and interesting with actionable steps. I think almost anyone would be able to get something out of this book. I really appreciate it the nuance and action items. Thank you so much for giving me access to this book!" — Early reader review

"I have never felt so understood by an author. As an Emergency Department RN and mom to 2 under 2, I am constantly battling feeling the effects of burnout. Emily Ballesteros does an amazing job of identifying the key aspects to burn out and offering realistic, approachable solutions. Filled with humor and relatable anecdotes, this is the perfect book to help you end the constant cycle of burnout." — Early reader review
